But the renowned fashion photographer is best known for spanning the gap between commercial campaigns and provocative fine art projects. Over recent years, she’s turned her lens on reproductive rights and abortion access in Texas, taken an unflinching look at the experience of inhabiting a human body in her exhibition The Garden, and teamed up with Aries and Mia Khalifa to launch a limited edition t-shirt raising money for on-the-ground grassroots organisations in Palestine. Even more recently, she’s released Walls – a new book of photographs created in collaboration with We Are Not Numbers, a non-profit dedicated to resisting dehumanisation and supporting the next generation of Palestinian writers. Taken between 2013 and 2019 on both sides of the Israeli apartheid wall, Weir’s evocative images trace this deathly rupture through the occupied Palestinian West Bank. From smouldering rubble to tree trunks strung with explosives, and the golden sun casting grim shadows on the monolithic concrete partition, Weir’s sensitive images present the details and signs of violence and its incursions into the landscape, architecture and everyday life of Palestinians. The images are divided by a series of texts written by Palestinian authors documenting their personal stories and experiences, curated by We Are Not Numbers. Proceeds from the book sales will go towards the charities We Are Not Numbers and Amos Trust to help positive sociopolitical change for the Palestinian people.
